The main similarity poker and life share is that you get a deck of cards to play in each. How you play your cards matters more than what cards you get in each. Nevertheless, the most salient difference is that an individual can choose not to play poker, but you cannot choose not to play ‘the game of life’.
Life has one thing over poker though: while life offers you its own deck of cards, you yourself as an individual have your own deck to choose from.
What do I mean by this? At any moment, for any reason, you can begin pulling cards from your own deck, the deck that unleashes imagination.
For example, one thing that I often do with people whether I know them or not is pull the ‘friend’s card’; this is because one need not be friends, to be friendly. That much is obvious. What’s not oft-considered is that the interactions between stranger and stranger when juxtaposed with the interaction between friend and friend are worlds apart when they often need not be.
Many people treat strangers as strangers, and that’s totally understandable. But that doesn’t mean strangers can’t be treated as friends. That is totally the choice of the individual. Pulling the friend’s card helps in that respect.
While pulling the friend’s card is ‘no big deal’ when friends are interacting, it’s significant when strangers are interacting because that’s not the default mode under which people mentally engage with each other and many times its wholly expected. Irrespective of that though, is something worth considering because often times you never know what particular situation an individual can find themselves in, or what type of circumstances you may be able to aid in.
The best part about this idea is that drawing from your personal deck of cards, regardless of what card you decided to pull, is a choice.
A choice that never has to be made, but is always there; a choice that at times ought to be considered because ultimately it could change somebody’s life.
One curious thing about relationships of myriad times is that often times, someone knows something is wrong but they do not ask about it. In my estimation it happens far more often than it should. I saw this happen with friends and family growing up far more often than I would like to admit.
Perhaps pulling the friend’s card could help remedy that some. It never hurts to try since the worst thing that can happen is that someone folds that card, which is totally the option of that individual and their inherent freedoms. But the choice is always there at least.
