“One of our best-kept secrets is the degree to which a handful of huge corporations control the flow of information in the United States. Whether it is television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, or the Internet, a few giant conglomerates are determining what we see, hear, and read. And the situation is likely to become much worse as a result of radical deregulation efforts by the Bush administration and some horrendous court decisions,” warned Congressman Bernie Sanders, adding, “This is an issue that Congress can no longer ignore.”

A large portion of society has blind trust in mainstream media news reporting, even though they have constantly ignored countless vital issues plaguing society in numerous ways.

Mainstream media manipulation has further reach than most individuals are cognizant of; this type of reach is facilitated not only by the use of endless propaganda, but also lays the foundation for serious social engineering to take place when coupled with manipulation techniques such as astroturfing.

This salient issue of social engineering via media manipulation goes back quite some time.  In fact, it was Edward Bernays, who fathered modern propaganda and whose influential reach was so far in scope that Time Magazine voted him one of the most influential people of the 20th century.  In his book Propaganda,  Bernays went on to state that:

““The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. …In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons…who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.””

That is social engineering at its finest.

Such information has always been right in the open, but since the mainstream media doesn’t report it, it ‘doesn’t exist’.  This type of mindset is what often gets individuals to share thoughts along the lines of: “Well the media didn’t report that.  It can’t be true” as if the media are the gatekeepers of reality.  That is the very definition of a ‘high priest’ – someone who cannot be questioned and whose authority is always higher than yours.  And that’s exactly what the type of mindset the establishment wants [1].

As Thomas Huxley once stated:

“The deepest sin against the human mind is to believe things without evidence. Science is simply common sense at its best – that is, rigidly accurate in observation, and merciless to fallacy in logic.”

It’s simply up to you – the individual – to be incisive, and sift carefully in order to figure out not only what is being reported, and whether it in fact is true, but also what is not being reported, which is often vastly more important.  Countless other questions may follow; this is merely starting point.

In the end, ignorance in the age of information is a choice.

Choose wisely.

[1] This type of mentality also shows the lack of critical thinking that is missing, which is par for the course considering what the public schooling system is about.
