Two weeks ago I ventured to one of my favorite weekend writing places.  Admittedly, I used to go this place to just relax with friends and have a good time, and I still do, but now I mainly just go and do my own thing mostly writing and doing research while sometimes running into people I know.  I also enjoy this place a lot because the manager lets me bring my laptop in, which isn’t something some places will allow at nighttime on a weekend so I really appreciate that wholeheartedly.

When I walked in I didn’t expect this place to be too busy.  In fact, it was almost standing room only which kind of shocked me since it never gets that packed.  As such, I had to wait for my usual spot where I always end up in.  I could tell something was up given that half the people had Hawaiian shirts on.  After meeting a few people I find out that there was a wedding party with lots of people that had flown in from Chicago for the wedding.

While waiting for a drink, a seat happened to open up and I sat down on the bar.  After saying hello to the bartenders, I end up introducing myself to the man next to me while passing time.  Long story short, after getting to know each other for a bit, this man next to me, who was probably 5 years my junior, took nigh an hour and a half giving me a veritable crash course on places to venture for myriad reasons.

It didn’t matter whether it was coffee shops, restaurants, bars, or something else; he literally took the time to give me advice on dozens of places to venture too.  I told him I appreciated it greatly because (1) it’s always great finding somewhere new to go to, but more importantly (2) I’ve been searching for places to read, do research, write, etc. and it just so happens that he gave me more ideas than I could handle for weeks to come.

I mention all this because he didn’t have to do that at all.  Yet, he was incredibly (and thankfully) insistent on this.  I felt bad that we were discussing this when we could have been discussing anything else.  He wasn’t having it though; he just went on with suggestion after suggestion until we each went our ways.

I call this an ‘anonymous’ donation because he really didn’t know me, but was still willing to take well over an hour (while he was actually with friends as well) to help me find a new cubby hole.  It was really neat and I was blown away and I couldn’t thank him enough.

Friends taking the time to help you figure something out are fantastic, one of the best things friendships can offer.  But when strangers are willing to do the same?  Now that’s an emotional bank account donation if there ever were one.

When things at time might seem dismal, its instances like this that give me hope for society as a whole.  Little acts like this might not mean a lot to some, but to me personally they mean the world.

The human element is an intriguing thing.  You will have people that know you for a very long time that take you for granted, and there’s people you know for minutes and start doing the most random and amazing things for you.  These circumstances that revolve around people you don’t know is what we’ll call an anonymous donation.

Through a confluence of circumstances in person as well as online two days ago I had a few people randomly send me messages or drop comments when I least expected; I was appreciative of this act of kindness and let them know.  I don’t know any of these folks at this moment, and that’s the point, they are anonymous in the true sense of the word.

Sometimes the most minute of gestures is all one needs to go from merely beginning to sink (mentally, emotionally, psychological, et al) to having an act of kindness act as a buoy to keeps you floating among the tides.

One thing is someone you know doing something nice for you, and that you can totally understand.  In fact, days ago my friend was having a really bad day due to a divorce and so on, and our other friend that’s like a sister wrote a note for him that was very thoughtful.  When you’re going through incredibly tough times like my friend is, kindness goes a very long way, and oft-times it doesn’t take a lot of effort.

Having someone you know do something for you, anything, is incredibly in my opinion.  It should be appreciated every time and twice on Sundays.

But when people you don’t know do something random for you?  That’s one of those things that life is all about.

Kindness knows no bounds.

Today I found out that one of my friends got fired from somewhere.  That’s never a good thing.  However, when that is done in retaliation of what someone else did, then I have a really big problem with it as a human being, regardless if I know the person or not.  I think most people would feel the same way.

The person that carried out the retaliation is known me, though to say we’re friends would be a stretch.  In any case, there’s not a lot of things that would get me to ‘close’ an emotional bank account but picking on people is essentially one of them.  Am I angry?  No.  Do I hate this person?  No, not at all.  I haven’t been angry or hateful of anyone in a really long time, many years in fact.  Poker helped me conquer those emotions and I consider myself lucky since it helped me deal with things kind of on-the-spot given how poker is merciless in poking at stick at you and testing you.  That said, there’s only person I would say I actually ever hated, and this person really earned it.  In fact, I told them right to their face, which I never thought I would do to anyone but it happened nonetheless.

In any case, the vanguard point is that the main emotion that envelops me is a storm of searing frustration; an ocean of frustrating that is never ending.

While the parameters for how one individual deals with another is different from person to person, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think that most individuals do have that proverbial line that shouldn’t be crossed.  What that line is for everyone else, I know not.  What I do know is that when that line is crossed, then that’s the end of that.

I won’t be unkind to this person, even though deep down inside I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to bury this person upside down in my front yard and use them as my next Christmas tree just as a start.  Irrespective of that though, my heart screams mindfulness-mindfulness-mindfulness even as my ego disagrees.

It’s just better to drain that ocean of gasoline before a spark ignites it because it’s just not worth it.

Nigh a week ago or so, I ended that particular write up about emotional bank accounts with the topic of “interest rates”, totally jesting.  It didn’t occur to me until now about making that a ‘topic’ of discussion under emotional bank accounts until today.

Today I ran a friend that I run into every now and then that’s grown to become something of an older sister in my mind.  I even openly tell another friend that, who has known her far longer than I have, and he sees her just as so since that’s the trust she has garnered with him as well.

Anyways, today there was a circumstance that exemplified this notion best.  We began with catching up for a considerable time.  Thence, after speaking about her demotivational speaking and how that’s going, and I’m not saying this in jest, she literally is working on ways to demotivate people (don’t ask), we caught up for a while and then she got to venting.

There’s venting, and then there’s VENTING.  This was the latter.

The former would be merely having run-of-the-mill complains that help relieve steam, while the latter is the stuff that if you hold inside it’ll make you stew and turn green.  She went on to vent considerably, and when she was done, I followed suit and opened the release valve as well; she vented about something significant in her life, while I vented about my Mom’s health and my concern for her and her well being.

These circumstances are the type of things that aren’t planned but can be seen as the ‘returns’ that are accrued from consistently making ‘deposits’ into emotional bank accounts.  And while conversations in general can be seem as ‘no big deal’ at first glance, the fact that there’s a veritable industry around this very subject goes to show the significance of this.

What kind of ‘returns’ relationships of myriad types have is wholly dependent on time, effort, and so on, but often times these ‘returns’ help when you least expect them, and that’s why they are incredibly crucial.

An individual never knows when you might need to open a release valve where pressure has built to a certain point, and I sure as heck didn’t know I needed to vent about my Mom’s health again until today.

And believe me, that made all the difference in the world.

My day (and hopefully hers) went from merely “wanting to get research and writing” done to steamrolling ahead like a locomotive.

That’s one thing about life, sometimes (1) not only do you not know you need to release some steam, but more important, (2) you might not realize how much you can help another person merely by lending an ear when they least expect it.

And while I am grateful for my friend lending an ear, I’m equally grateful for everyone who’s doing their part for their friends just like in the example above, for its little acts of kindness like that which make the world a better place.

Isn’t that what part of life is about, making the world a better place?

Who would have thought conversations could do such a thing?  But they do, they do all the time, it’s just not oft-considered.

The above circumstance is merely an example of Gandhi’s timeless quote:

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Change that starts with every single one of you reading this; change that is possible every day; change that happens every day; change that at times comes when you least expect it.

And isn’t it ironic that change is literally one of the things that accrues from deposits into bank accounts?

“How about them apples?”

Author’s Note:

I really couldn’t resist using the last quote from my favorite movie of all time, Good Will Hunting.

Good Will Hunting is really a fantastic movie all around.  It’s loaded with far more substance than modern movies are, and it has life lessons to boot.  In fact, it makes me feel emotional just contemplating it.  It’s really worth watching.  I’ve easily seen it over 100 times.

Deposits and withdraws within emotional bank accounts have varying degrees.

Just as there’s a difference between the precious metals gold and silver when compared to cash (federal reserve notes), there’s a significant difference between normal every-day acts of kindness and more significant ones.

Gold and Silver are tangible assets.  Cash is merely federal reserve notes.  The main difference is that the former asset is tangible, while the latter is merely the facsimile of it.  In the same way that gold and silver vis a vis cash are on separate levels, some normal every-day acts individuals undertake for people juxtaposed with more significant acts are on separate tiers.

For instance, saying hello to someone, smiling, opening a door for someone, doing a small favor, are all actions that contribute positively to an individual’s emotional bank account.  However, these acts are not the same as someone changing your tire, helping you move, someone baling you out of trouble, doing a big favor, lending an ear in a time of need, etc.  It’s clear these examples rank differently across the spectrum [1].  How noteworthy an action is, along with how much a person appreciates the act dictate how significant that act is as an emotional deposit.

The point is that relationships build upon trust, actions, time, history and other factors, and those factors outline the parameters of why we hold certain friends in higher standards than others.  That’s why one could argue there’s a difference between people being friends, good friends, great friends and best friends.  Another argument could be made that, as one goes up in tiers, one ‘kind of’ expects (I say this loosely) each higher tier to do more than the lower, IF it all possible [2].

For instance, would you expect a total stranger to do you a small favor?  Maybe, maybe not.  But would you expect a friend to do so?  Probably most of the time.  Equally, would you expect a random friend or acquaintance to drop everything if something significant happened like a family member was in the hospital?  Maybe.  But would you expect one of your best friends to do so if you asked?  More than likely.

In no way am I saying that anybody needs to do anything, simply that there’s a certain expectancy in friendship based on the circumstances and issues we individuals face.  It’s simply people having your ‘back’ so to speak.

Each type of emotional deposit, each type action, builds trust and loyalty.  These factors build relationships, and further solidify what they ultimate become among the above discussed tiers of friendship.

While that might not seem like a big deal, it is incredibly paramount, for society runs on arguably trust more than anything.

You trust your deposits to be safe in your bank, you trust your food to be safe, you trust your children to be safe in school, you trust media is telling you the truth, and so on.  Every single one of us has a level of trust that is inherent in nigh every interaction we undertake, and yet, paradoxically, trust is nigh never discussed in every day topics.  Ruminate upon that deeply for it has a bearing on how society operates.

As trust between individuals grows, a healthy relationship follows, relationships of myriad types.  And the level of trust between each of these relationships dictates what you expect and what you do not.  That said, everyone is different, and that’s one of the spices of life, variety.

No matter what type of outlook or expectancy an individual has on friendships, there is a significant difference between one act and another, whatever those acts may be.

And just like there are rocks, crystals, gems, diamonds and black pearls in nature, there are individuals that mirror each of those, and with good reason, because that difference matters.  If it didn’t, there wouldn’t be a distinction between strangers and family, between friends and best friends.

That distinction is what life is about: quality human beings [3].

For quality human beings were, are, and always will be a cut above the rest.

No amount of cash, gold, or silver in the world can top that.

___________________________________________________________

[1] An individual’s spectrum under which actions ping on an emotional bank account varies, and sometimes considerably.  My hopes in the above example was simply to note that, even though each individual values different actions differently, there is a point where some actions are of smaller significance when compared to others.

[2] I say ‘kind of’ because what people expect from friendships vary given an individual’s point of view, culture, society, philosophy, spirituality, age, sex, life experience and so on.

[3] Quality human being doesn’t imply perfection of any individual, far from it.  It just means the assemblage of acts an individual undertakes over the course of a lifetime that ultimately end up echoing who you are over the long term.

Emotional Bank Accounts: Withdraw Withdraw Withdraw!

“The relationship with yourself sets the tone for ever other relationship you have.”
– Robert Holden

April 11, 2019

Though I venture around to different places to go for writing, today something noteworthy just happened at one of my favorite places nigh an hour ago.  I won’t mention the business because I don’t want to get my friends in trouble but today the type of ‘emotional transactions’ that fall under ‘withdraw’ that were handed out like candy on Halloween went something like this:

Withdraw-withdraw-withdraw-withdraw-deposit-withdraw-withdraw-withdraw-withdraw-withdraw-deposit-deposit-withdraw-deposit-withdraw-withdraw-withdraw-&-deposit simultaneously-withdraw-withdraw-withdraw-withdraw…and so on [1].

It got so bad that my friend and I had to put our headphones on.  There is a significant difference between honest to goodness constructive criticism and just tossing criticism grenades cheerfully like its no big deal as the person that critiques walks away with a smile on their face and the grenades detonate.  Who doesn’t love that.

The resounding effect was that the individuals working in the place and the customers were left highly discouraged.  One can have all the subtly in the world, but when people use compliments as weapons it’s hard not to notice.

One doesn’t often see the above type of instances since these are the type of ‘discussions’ one might see in a backroom of an establishment or business if there was any consideration for tactfulness.  Still, this circumstance is something that happens more often than it should and it reflects an individual’s moral compass.

This very issue has been discussed by my friends and I at length several times, though I was never subject to it in person at this place.  Most individuals have seen a version of this circumstance take place, whether to one person, or a group of individuals, but the effect is always the same: emotional bank account get drained to a considerable degree.   Heck, I’m a decent human being, and some of the stuff said would leave me closing that emotional bank account without a second thought [2].  Nobody should be treated like that.

It’s a pity instances like this take place because there’s really no reason for it if the individual carrying out these ‘withdraws’ was a being a decent caring human being in any way whatsoever.  The ‘perfect’ book in dealing with circumstances that comes to mind is How To Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie.  This book is timeless for a reason, it works.  Let’s remain on point though.

How you treat people matters.  Obvious, no?  Except, perhaps not, since it happens far to often.

Perhaps its someone’s upbringing, maybe its ego, maybe it’s just having a bad day, but the vanguard reason matters not for the results are the same.  If choice is available, and in the above example it always is, how is it hard not to choose being a decent human being?

All the above merely comes down to quality of consciousness.  How an individual is deep down inside at the being level is merely a reflection of their inner self.  Yes, not all instances are the same, not even close.  That’s why I was highlighting the one above and being very precise in not merely picking one instance between 2 random individuals, but one in which the same scenario took place repeatedly because one can see that the established pattern; this instance is not merely a one-time thing, like ‘having a bad day’.  Lashing out because someone ‘has a bad day’, while not pleasant to be a part of, is at least understandable.

But putting people down repeatedly establishes a sequence of events that (1) is not only pleasant to be around, but more importantly (2) drains emotional bank accounts when they shouldn’t.  That’s also the leading reason why some people have quit that place.

Simply put: if an individual puts people beneath them, as the above gem of a human being did, they merely shows what they will do to get to the top of the foodchain, the proverbial mountain.

The thing about mountains is, the highest peaks are also the parts that wither away the fastest over time due to erosion.  When that happens, the mountain remains for it is the very foundation.

And nothing beats an ironclad firm foundation, for it is the crucial component of any individual, of any group, any family, any community, any enterprise and every society.

That is why it all comes down to the individual, for even though every one in this place has a reason to lash out when Darth Vader arrives, they choose not to.  That means everything for it is a reflection of who each of them are [3].

It is a reflection of what makes the world a better place, every single day.
___________________________________________________________
Notes:

[1] While the withdraw and deposit simultaneously might seem to be a joke at first blush, it’s not.  It was a ‘compliment’ (and I say this loosely) followed by an incisive critique.  If it was a fair one, that’s one thing, but really wasn’t.

[2] This doesn’t mean anyone should treat the person that carried out put-downs in the same way, not at all.  Just stating that simply because something can happen and is technically allowed, doesn’t mean one need to respond in like-fashion.   The scenario above is one of those in which an individual could often be seen just zoning out and ignoring what is being said since they know there’s no use to it and nothing positive is coming to the fore and could you blame them?

[3] Though, to be fair, I really couldn’t blame anyone that lashed out under said circumstance.

Emotional Bank Accounts: Investing In Yourself | #PositiveVibes | #Positivity | #Love

Out of all of the emotional bank accounts an individual can invest in, the most important one to always consider is your own emotional bank account.  This notion is the equivalent of loving yourself first before you love others.

Consider the following: how likely is an individual to be friendly, kind, caring, loving, et al., if their emotional bank account is at $0?  Or worse, negative?  It’s something to ruminate upon at length.

It’s intriguing to consider the capacity that an individual has to act out of a genuinely caring perspective.  It is not unreasonable to think that an individual’s exposure to negative circumstances will be downright emotionally, morally, and spiritually draining.  Conversely, it is reasonable to see that exposure to environments and individuals of a positive and loving nature will have significant results.

The first environment that an individual is involved in and is exposed to is their very self, their very own being.  This is a crucial detail because it allows for an individual to tailor their environment from the outset, by starting from within.

At this point, all individuals have a choice: what type of ideas and circumstances to subject themselves to?  Each of these ideas and circumstances that are chosen will affect an individual’s emotional bank account.  For example, exposure to ceaseless fear-mongering and lashing out from mainstream media that rarely offers solutions will be incredibly draining and will make an individual fearful and feel helpless ; exposure to more grounded, solution-based, vibrant and thoughtful ideas will allow for an individual to be energized and stay balanced, not overlooking significant details within any particular issue.

Each thought, each idea, each circumstance, infuses or subtracts emotional energy within an individual.  It is paramount for an individual to make sure that a proactive undertaking is carried out not only to make sure that inner balance is maintained, but an individual’s emotional bank account is being replenished if emotional energy was withdrawn and/or increased as much as possible irrespective of circumstance.

How each person accomplishes is the choice of the individual, for each individual is significantly different; only each individual will know what works for them, which is not necessarily what will work for others.

What’s the best way to replenish your emotional bank account?  Is it merely doing something fun, or perhaps something meaningful?  Is it finding something inspiring?  Is it a vacation?  Is it simply a day off?  Is it spending time with family and/or friends?  There are many factors to consider, yet the possibilities abound.

Just make sure to do what’s best for you, for only you know what is best.

Author’s Note:

While a lot of this might seem obvious in hindsight, not much is said about it that I can find.  This is all written for deeper consideration of what supercharges you, the individual, to be at the top of your game.  And to merely consider that is always worth it.

One last thing, small acts that energize you shouldn’t be overlooked.  One need not take a fancy vacation to the Maldives to supercharge yourself.  I mean, if you can do THAT, then by all means (wouldn’t that be nice!).  That said, often times, simply adding a variety of smaller actions could do a lot.  This approach works for me quite often.

Some of the smaller considerations an individual may undertake could be exercises of myriad types, making time for your favorite things (books, movies, shows, songs, poems, quotes, places to visit, photos, drawing, scrapbooking, et al.), undertaking your favorite past times (walking, jogging, swimming, ruminating, etc.), and many other things.  No ideas should be overlooked no matter how simple they seem at first blush, for you never know how the smallest of ideas might just resonate with you and infuse you with energy.
