At this current point today, I’m well over a dozen cups of coffee.

You might ask, how does that couple into mindfulness, to which I would respond, how does that not couple into mindfulness?

This is not the first time that I have struggled and this has happened to me.  I have made poor choices like this when it comes to health in the past, but at least I am being attentive and pondering them [1].  Stress is the vanguard reason for me drinking so much coffee, but I know deep down inside that if I am being totally mindful and in control I wouldn’t allow such instances to take place.

This is brought up for others to contemplate whatever it is that they struggle with when they are stressed out and life brings the waves that it inevitably does.  Obstacles will always be obstacles, but (1) they can be avoided by finding a new approach, a new path, (2) they can be tackled head on, or (3) they can be ignored altogether if the choice is possible.

Running headlong into an obstacle as if I am Juggernaut from X-Men, as I have done today, is definitely not the prudent or logical thing to do, and yet, here I am, dancing self-torched amid the rubble of uncommon sense.

Obstacles always come to pass, and we should be prepared to face them as best as possible to our utmost abilities.  But this can only be accomplished by a proactive approach, which involves Mindfulness as one of the tools.

This is because Mindfulness is the skeleton key to innumerable solutions and the port from which the individual traverses into healthier pastures.  But such cannot be accomplished unless we are focused on each step we take.

Those steps can lead to a healthy or unhealthy life, to a mindful or mindless approach, or to a positive or a negative future.  Given that the future is fused to the past, and both center upon the present, now is all we have to be mindful.

Mindfulness starts this very moment.

[1] When I’m very healthy, drinking lots of coffee isn’t a big deal.  But right now, it is.  I’m done drinking coffee for today, but I know I have to remain cognizant every day after.

Mindfulness Musing: Choices Made Out Of Fear & Love | #Life | #Choices | #Mindfulness

Today I made a choice that was totally fear-based choice.  I state this because I usually try to be mindful and make love-based choices.

For clarification purposes, a fear-based choice is simply a poor quality of consciousness choice, while a love-based choice is a high quality of consciousness choice.  More importantly, choices made out of love are choices that are good not because it’s the ‘right thing to do’, but because you are acting out of goodness.  Making a choice as such means you’re doing it not because you’re expected too, but because it is who you are.

Many times people do the ‘right’ thing, but it’s not really who they are.  They only carry out such choices because that’s what society expects of them, and not really because that’s who they are at the being level, all the way down at the soul.

The reason I state that is because it bothers me that I made a fear-based choice because I try and make positive choices, no matter how big or small the choice.  It can be as simple as (1) being polite to someone, (2) saying hello to someone, (3) helping someone out, (4) giving an honest compliment, (5) being mindful of other’s needs, (6) telling someone you appreciate them, so on and so forth.

Even with all that, and the fact that I wanted to make a positive choice and was even incredibly mindful of it, I still acted out of fear.  I thought about it for quite a bit, so it’s not like this was an autopilot choice out of fear, but still.  I keep pondering about what choice I could have made that was different, but I can’t think of too many, and all were based out of fear.

The reason this is crucial is because choices based out of fear nigh ever lead to anything good, and stunt an individual’s evolution, if not make them devolve outright.   This is where people begin making one fear based choice after another after another and they begin spiraling into turmoil and so on.  I’ve seen this with a few family members so it’s something that I’ve been privy too quite often.

The opposite side of this spectrum is also true though.  Choices made out of goodness and what’s right exacerbate an individual’s evolution and growth.  And the same way consecutive negative choices compound into a snowballing avalanche of negative circumstances, consistent positive choices help an individual evolve in myriad positive ways creating a tsunami of positive change.

In any case, I share the above so that individuals may perhaps consider being cognizant whenever they make choices of various types.

Being mindful of the approach you take in life does take effort, but it’s always worth it.

“Hey, Banagher, do you realize you look out into the distance a lot?”
“I do?”
“Yeah, like just now.”
“I’m not really looking at anything when I do that.  It’s hard to explain.  I guess, I’m wondering where – “
“Where your father is?”
“No, where I am.”
“Oh, sorry.”
It feels like no matter what I’m doing it doesn’t actually feel like I’m there.”
“I know what you mean.  It’s like you can’t put your finger on it but everything feels off.  I sometimes wonder if that feeling is going to keep growing stronger.”

The above conversation is from the anime series called Gundam Unicorn.  Yesterday, while organizing my home office, which has been in need of a serious overhaul, I decided to re-watch this series again.

After hearing the above exchange between the main protagonist and another character, it hit me: this is exactly how I often act and feel.  I’m not exactly sure what to think of it, but I know I mentally ‘zone out’ quite a bit, more so than I realized in fact.  It’s taken a few different people comment on it, or sneak up behind me to startle me for me to even notice it.

I am uncertain if it is lack of mindfulness, or what it is.  It’s hard to pinpoint for me, but I am merely trying to consider it just to make sure I’m not overlooking anything, which I’ve done in the past.

That said, I do realize that the last few weeks I haven’t employed mindfulness as much as I should.  This is because it would make me ponder my Mom’s health and my grandmas passing most of all.  Considering the fragility of life and how everything can just change in an instance is just something that always leaves me gloomy.  And honestly, that’s not something I want to think of since almost every time I do I end up feeling like I’m crumbling on the inside.

In any case, do any of you ever stare off often into the distance?  Everyone zones out, but I’m not sure how many people would do so often.  In such instances I have wondered what individuals think about, but I never truly asked that often.  I think I will begin doing more now.

I often wonder what prompts the mind to do such a thing.  I do realize that personally, this might happen more often when I am tired, but that need not be the case though.  In fact, my mind goes into this mode most often when I’m either reading, writing or at the gym.  Ironically, that’s also when my mind is usually most engaged, but it happens nonetheless.

I’m not implying that this type of zoning out is necessarily a bad thing, at least not with what I’m talking about personally, but it’s merely something for contemplation if anything.

And contemplation of life and each of its idiosyncrasies is one of the most captivating things that shows off the range that life entails, and if that’s not worthy of exploration and thought, what is?

Today I found out that one of my friends got fired from somewhere.  That’s never a good thing.  However, when that is done in retaliation of what someone else did, then I have a really big problem with it as a human being, regardless if I know the person or not.  I think most people would feel the same way.

The person that carried out the retaliation is known me, though to say we’re friends would be a stretch.  In any case, there’s not a lot of things that would get me to ‘close’ an emotional bank account but picking on people is essentially one of them.  Am I angry?  No.  Do I hate this person?  No, not at all.  I haven’t been angry or hateful of anyone in a really long time, many years in fact.  Poker helped me conquer those emotions and I consider myself lucky since it helped me deal with things kind of on-the-spot given how poker is merciless in poking at stick at you and testing you.  That said, there’s only person I would say I actually ever hated, and this person really earned it.  In fact, I told them right to their face, which I never thought I would do to anyone but it happened nonetheless.

In any case, the vanguard point is that the main emotion that envelops me is a storm of searing frustration; an ocean of frustrating that is never ending.

While the parameters for how one individual deals with another is different from person to person, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think that most individuals do have that proverbial line that shouldn’t be crossed.  What that line is for everyone else, I know not.  What I do know is that when that line is crossed, then that’s the end of that.

I won’t be unkind to this person, even though deep down inside I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to bury this person upside down in my front yard and use them as my next Christmas tree just as a start.  Irrespective of that though, my heart screams mindfulness-mindfulness-mindfulness even as my ego disagrees.

It’s just better to drain that ocean of gasoline before a spark ignites it because it’s just not worth it.

Nowadays, not a day goes by that individuals are not exposed to constant notifications, texts, videos, apps and daily reminders – these are everywhere.  Be it at home, at work, or on the go, these never-ending streams of information drain hundreds of hours off of our schedules yearly.

In fact, according to a study conducted by the University of Southern California in 2013, the average individual in America goes through more than 13 hours of media daily.[1][Bold Emphasis Added]

Most of it does not add much meaning to our lives either, unfortunately.

Society’s addiction to this overarching all-things-now pattern has increased proportional to our technological advancement, if not more so.  Not a day goes by without the instant gratification that is contained within all forms social media, the mainstream media sound-bite reality, texting, on-demand Google answers, and much more.  This instant connection to all-things-now has spawned a new type of addiction: addiction to Speed.

In Speed – Facing Our Addiction To Fast and Faster – and Overcoming Our Fear Of Slowing Down, Dr. Stephanie Brown Ph.D. makes the argument that individuals of myriad types have become addicted to the instant gratification that is hyper-prevalent in modern lifestyles.  Psychologist Brown notes:

“That gratification comes from two places – the illusion of rapid connection to other people, and immediate access to information we feel we need, be it a Google Map, an investment insight, or the answers to a trivia question.”[2]

This type of addictive behavior can have serious detrimental consequences for individuals.  What’s worse, society has acclimated to it in such a way that it’s become natural to operate in such a manner.

What is Dr. Brown noticing exactly?  Brown casts light on the matter:

“What I am seeing in my practice as an addiction specialist is that, especially in urban areas, this speed trap is outstripping people’s ability to manage, to fulfill all of their responsibilities, and even to cope.  The idea that we literally have at our fingertips the tools to do so much more than we actually have the capacity to do well has created an impossible bind that leads to chronic stress and a sense of failure.  You do not have the ability to be on 24/7 like a computer, but you believe you should be able to keep going, and that you will be able to do so if you only try harder.  And so you push yourself incessantly, creating an addictive spiral.”[3]

Coming to terms with this, it is crucial as individuals to know that this is taking place in order to be able to tackle this issue head on.  Issues that are unknown cannot be solved, and only by employing a proactive approach can individuals be able to displace and conquer such issues.

In order to thwart these subversive circumstances, an examination at the opposite side of the spectrum is at hand.  If a full-steam-ahead-no-matter-what approach is what society has become addicted to, then a more mindful, detached, and self-engaged approach stands at the opposite side of that coin.

Mindfulness – the state or quality of being mindful or aware of something – is the first step in overcoming this conundrum.  What mindfulness offers is a thoughtful, relaxed, and engaged version of what individuals can are capable of doing when their mind is at ease and focused.

The problem is that this Mindful state of being is nigh never achieved because of the issues noted above by Dr. Brown, as well as others.  Another salient and ever-present reason for this is that people get into the bad habit of autopiloting through life without much thought.

One thing Poker has taught me is that many players can engage in autopilot, meaning that they tend to play the game in an automatic fashion without much thought being put into each and every circumstance.  Similarly, many, if not most individuals employ this type of approach in daily life.

Some glaring examples of the ways this can be noticed in life are: (1) seeing how many people forget someone’s name after they meet them, or (2) how many people don’t remember a significant portion of their drive on their way home, or even (3) how some people text while driving.  There are many more examples, but those are some of the more common ones that help shed light on the matter.

Being cognizant of this, it’s important to keep in mind that mindfulness can only be achieved by being mentally centered, by employing a hyper-focused, top-down approach that allows individuals to ‘be in the moment’.

As Captain J.A. Hatfield once shared:

“The art of resting the mind and the power of dismissing from it all care and worry is probably one of the secrets of our great men.”

If you want to achieve anything significant in life, we must home-in on what we think.  As the sage Buddha once noted:

“We are what we think.  All that we are arises with our thoughts.  With our thoughts we make our world.”

What world will you make for yourself: a world where instant gratification controls you, or a mindful life where you control your world?
