5 Lessons From Owning & Operating Businesses In The First Year [Part 2] | #Business | #Finance | #Investing | #Growth | #Mindset

The previous write up discussed 5 lessons from the first year of business of my close friend and business owner Hussein Jabai and me.  The lessons bellow will continue along the same lines with 5 additional thoughts that could prove valuable for those starting their own business.

#6:  Know Your Customer Base

Are your primary customers middle-class consumers?  Are they individuals concerned with health?  Are they parents searching for entertainment options for their kids?  Are they females?  Males?  Moreover, what’s the age range of your customers?  Those two examples (of many) dovetail incredibly closely, for they allow you to know how to tailor your business model for your customers.

Social media analytics and other tools help with this.  Figure out how to ascertain the demographics of your customer base, and you’re one significant step closer to success towards knowing whether your products will appeal simply to parents, techies, gamers, intellectuals, or any other type of individuals.

#7:  Don’t Be Afraid To Go Against The Grain

Though Jabai’s business model and myself each go against the grain in their own ways, we will focus on what he is undertaking because the scope is much larger and intriguing.

Jabai is an individual who is in the discipline of health and wellness.  For business, he could have simply stuck within the run-of-the-mill health and wellness strata of society, and found incredible success.  But he’s in the process of expanding way beyond that.  His passions are filtering not only into helping individuals with personal training, which he thoroughly enjoys, but into his Fighter Training Systems (FTTS Project), which aids in Injury Prevention for First Responders.  But there’s more, he is also undertaking a personal initiative to create a program that strives for a much larger scale regional (and perhaps global reach) that could help individuals not just locally, but in various global regions.

The above example is the type of mindset that doesn’t settle simply for success, but reaches into making a difference, which is what ultimately changes lives.

#8:  Always Strive To Continue Learning

Whether in life, business, personal relationships, or anything else, learning can take place reactively, or proactively.  Though lessons in each can provide incredible depth, reactive lessons (and insights) are simply lessons that come when the tide brings them, whenever time provides them, rather than you venturing into the ocean to seek your own veritable treasure.  In other words, you can wait for treasure to arrive on the shore of a beach brought about by waves, with that treasure brought to you, or you can venture into uncharted waters like a treasure hunter, and seek treasure of endless types.  Self-directed education is one of the ways that individuals can find treasure within the field of business.

A wiseman once said, learning from your mistakes leads to knowledge, while learning from those of others, leads to wisdom.  Always seek to learn from the footsteps provided from those before you, and even if you can’t because you happen to be doing something that’s brand new, you can still learn laterally from other individuals and their businesses in this respect.

In conjunction with that, one of the books that provided great insights into learning proactively is the book Small Business Marketing Kit For Dummies.  This is an excellent crash course into possible avenues for individuals seeking how to expand their awareness of marketing, all the while offering pragmatic examples of what can be undertaken.

#9:  Find (and Construct) Mutual Support Mindset Networks

It’s my estimation that the vanguard reason that Jabai and myself bonded so quickly wasn’t simply because we were business owners, but more importantly, our talks, whether business or personal, were based around the same type of mindset.  Each of us employs a mindset that doesn’t simply seeks success, but seeks to go beyond that into creating something unique and far reaching.

Where I myself seek to help individuals express their creative desires through the medium of LEGO in multifarious way which helps bring people of all ages joy in countless ways, Jabai is seeking to help people well beyond the scope of individually tailored health.

Jabai doesn’t simply strive to stay in a comfort zone and be only a personal trainer, he seeks to expand his health and wellness business well beyond the scope that most people within the health and wellness area do.

While individuals can truly do most (or possibly all) things in life alone, one need not go at it alone when there are people of the same type of mindset out there, you simply need to find them and grow those relationships, whether it is in life or business.

Mutual mindset support networks aid in significant ways, from learning how to streamline your approach, having open-minded brainstorming sessions, to proactive seeking to not only to learn lessons from one another, but from others as well.

Each of us is seeking incredible distinct dreams, but with the mindset of empowering others, whether it is creatively or through health, and to buttress that with relentless passion to grow not only as a business, but as individuals as well.

#10 – Do Not Throw Away Time By The Wayside

Mincing no words, the average person spends time inefficiently by the truckload, it is a problem we all have, and its unfortunately a growing trend.

According to an article from New York Daily News penned a while ago, the average person spends 5 hours watching TV daily with some watching even more than that.  At 5 hours per day, that amounts to 1,825 hours per year. That is 18250 hours per decade, and 91,250 hours per 50 years. That’s a lot of time! Over the course of 50 years, the total amount of time spent watching TV daily amounts to 3802 consecutive 24-hour days over that span.  Or “just” 5 hours a day, for 50 years.

For the sake of simplicity, let us assume most of us happen to get 8 hours a day sleeping. In an entire 168 hour work-week where the average person spends 56 hours a week sleeping, and 40 hours a week working, that leaves one with 72 hours free. If one were to spend 35 hours a week viewing television, then that would leave 37 hours of free time. That’s nearly half of all of one’s available time spent watching television. That doesn’t even count social media!  That seems ludicrous, does it not?  That also doesn’t even begin to cover other activities individuals may carry out that don’t yield growth, whether in life or business.

Those are just some statistics of how much time is wasted, and there’s a lot more.  The main point is that time is wasted by everyone including myself to varying extents.  With modern media, it’s easy to spend countless hours on various apps and websites.

The best way to get around to creating time templates is simply to watch how much time you spend on social media and websites.  There are apps that help with this.  Once you do this, you will be downright shocked at how much time you spend on certain apps per week.

As you realize where those time vortexes of yours are, you will be able to adjust accordingly, hopefully slotting something productive in those areas like self-directed learning, business analysis and forecasts, etc.[1]

Final Thoughts

In modern times, success in business is not as complex as it was in the past.  With the rise of the internet, social media and online social network, there are literally countless resources at hand, and a lot of those are free.  However, if you can learn (proactively rather than reactively) from the mistakes and footsteps others took in a way that it can prevent you from making the same mistakes yourself, thus helping you forgo unnecessary hardship and time waste, you will be quite a few steps ahead of the competition.

Seek to push your business beyond the boundaries of comfort zones, but first, seek to push yourself beyond what you think you are capable of.  What you do personally within your life, the mindset you employ, will inevitably seep into that of your business and your employees and will become the template for success in your future.

In life, individuals often surprise themselves of what they are capable of doing once they employ a can-do mindset, rather than a can’t-do mindset, and in business it’s not different.

Don’t wait upon the shores of life for treasures to come to you, veritable life insights that could also be applied to business; that is simply wasting time you could be using to venture on into the unknown seeking the treasures that life and business provide.  And you never know, when seeking those very treasures, you might just run into a life-lesson or insight that changes your life forever.

One can’t put a price tag to life-altering life-lessons and wisdom that come about which help you not only in life, but in business as well.  Those can only usually be attained by venturing beyond comfort zones.

Life happens to everyone, but unbounded success happens only to those that keep persevering beyond their comfort zones and into uncharted waters, even if they face a storm.  And just like those storms within the seas help provide the circumstances that create master navigators able to steer their vessels in any way, within any storm, the metaphorical storms life and business provide will make you capable of navigating through various circumstances be them economic downturns, personal plight, or anything else.

Such is the mindset of a proactive individual; such is the mindset that makes unbounded success inevitable.

Why write about mindset at all?[1] Why not write about pyramids, history, ancient civilizations, consciousness, advanced weapons, secret weapons, propaganda, and other topics?

This is because any of those topics, any topic whatsoever, shared by any individual, whether it comes from this blog, or anywhere else in your life, is irrelevant without approaching the topic with a proper mindset.  Whatever do I mean?

If you are reading this, and are a reader from a Western Nation, then more than likely you have been subjected to public schooling and it is doing a bang up job at ‘teaching’ you what to think, but not how to think.  Since that is the case, then you, as myself and many others, have been subjected to a tsunami of propaganda that would be unreal if people wouldn’t be writing about it over and over again.

Knowledge of this propaganda, social engineering et al., is crucial, for these tailor an individual’s public schooling, our knowledge base, our intellectual capacity, our mindset, and moreBut the mainstream establishment and mainstream public schooling will never outright tell you such things exist, and if they do, you get the cursory view of it, the watered-down version; you get the glossy book cover version, what looks nice, what looks pretty – a rosy-colored lens if there ever were one.  Rarely do we ever get the truth from governments and the media as individuals.  At least, not when it matters most.

More importantly, if an individual has been trained to not question anything, not to be inherently curious, if that individual has been trained to blindly follow orders, and merely become a cog in the machine, then what mindset would such an individual employ?  The mindset employed would be one of not exploring any subjects; that is system-imposed close-mindedness if there ever was any; a gear in a machine at worst, and the epitome of conformity at its best.  Such an individual would lack open-mindedness by default, such an individual would never contemplate possibilities as they could be, or as they are.

I could show you source after source after source of the most fascinating, and most interesting life-changing ideas, but if your mind isn’t open to it, it doesn’t matter now does it?  And it should matter, because the information discussed in this blog (for the most part) is incredibly important and has resounding effects in our individual lives.  These are resounding effects that could change you, the individual, down to the core.  But those effects cannot take place without having the proper mindset.

Mindset is the catapult from which the individual launches from, the space station from which the individual ventures into the unknows of space seeking answers, seeking knowledge, pondering deeper questions than ever thought possible, considering the finer strands that life and reality has to offer in more ways than you could have imagined.

Since time immemorial, individuals throughout history have tackled life head on with a sound mindset; individuals have risen to the occasion and conquered unfathomable obstacles; individuals have made inventions that changed the lives of everyone around them, changes that altered the course of history; all of this follows a “can do” attitude, a “can do” mindset.

But saying that mindset is everything would be a lie, for the wrong mindset employed can have incredibly damaging effects for individuals and those around them.  During World War II, the Nazi’s were the epitome of what the darker side of mindset can do.

To maximize the effect of mindset, individuals must be mindful of what they put it in their minds, of what they subject themselves to.  Mindset and mindfulness are not two separate lenses, but two gears in our intellectual machine, a machine whose purpose helps lay the foundation for the paths that you journey towards as an individual.

Where mindfulness is employed, a strong mindset follows, for mindfulness centers you, your thoughts, your actions; where mindfulness isn’t employed, a strong mindset could still be employed, but the action that follows will not be as focused, centered, incisive, precise, and so on.  Moreover, if your mindset is running on autopilot, running from your subconscious rather than from your being level, then you will not be engaged fully in life, and how could one make optimal choices in such a manner?  Do you see all those different tiers of mindfulness and how that couples to mindset?  And those are not all of them either, not by a longshot.

Mindset is still a tool all individuals may employ, not unlike a hammer.  And just like a hammer can build things, it can destroy things.  Mindset is just as so.  Mindset, employed correctly, will create magnificent things, like any other tool.  Mindset, employed incorrectly, is highly destructive, just like any tool can be.   Therefore, its paramount to be thoughtful in your actions and considerations, for they have a bearing in your life as an individual.

All tools are capable of being immensely helpful in every single way.  In what way, that is ultimately the choice of the individual.  A sound mindset is only useful if employed soundly, just as a hammer can only build things when used correctly.

Now I ask you this: you have a mental tool that’s known as mindset and serves as an incredible tool in your life; are you going to make sure the tool is going to be fully operational, ready to be deployed, sharpened as it needs to be, not unlike sharpening a knife before use?

With a sound mindset, what will you build with that tool?  What door will you create for yourself with that tool?  Are you open to those possibilities?

More importantly: where will that door lead?  The only way to find out is to begin constructing that door.  And the only way to do that is to become proactive in your own life, and not merely reactive to what life throws at you.

The notable John C. Maxwell said it best:

“Life is a matter of choices, and every choice you make makes you.”

Notes:

[1] This post is going to set the foundation in the dichotomy of the light side of mindset, and the dark side of mindset, each of which will be split into separate series.  Each side will be elaborated upon in the future at length.  This piece is merely to (1) serve as the introduction to showcase the dichotomy of mindset, but also to consider that (2) although the word mindset is tossed around quite often in modern life, there’s a significant different between each type of mindset, and the darker side of mind set is nigh never given a fair glance, yet alone deeply considered.

Mindset Mindset Mindset!

April 6, 2019

Two days ago, I had the fortunate circumstance of meeting a few individuals.  With three of these individuals, conversations delved into the topic of mindset; for the sake of brevity and time, we will focus on two of these.

The first person I met was right after I asked this gentleman how his day was.  Without missing a beat, is reply: “Everyday above ground is a good day.”

Translation: be thankful to be alive; negative circumstances be damned; being alive, being here, is good great.  That’s mindset.

The conversation lasted nigh five minutes, but it put an extra spring in my step that gave me a jolt I didn’t know I could have used.  That’s the thing about mindset, the type of mindset people employ is resounding, it resonates – both positively and negativelyIt affects those around you, whether you do it deliberately or not.  Now to the second circumstance in which I met someone where we talked about mindset.

Noticing that something was amyss with the woman next to me, I proceeded to ask her if everything was okay.  It wasn’t, not even close.  I thought what took place was that someone screwed up her drinks.  Only if it was that simple.

What happened in fact was she left her keys in her car.  That’s certainly problematicNot insurmountable, but a problem, nonetheless.  However, there’s more: she was going to be late work work.  Okay.  Bigger problem, but not the worst thing ever.  Still, there’s more.  Her car was still on.  Ah.  Yeah, there it is, the trifecta that life rarely tosses our way, but when it does, usually leaves us feeling overwhelmed.

Now she had a choice: how to respond to the situation?

How did she respond to the situation?  In seamless fashion, she dealt with it as best she could.  In fact, she did a fantastic job considering the circumstances.  She talked about mindset herself, she opened that door and talked about it for nigh an hour.  She mentioned how a year ago, she would have been incredibly upset, and would have self-deprecated non-stop.  Now?  Not even a thought.

That was her choice, and the best one at that.

Every single one of us has dealt with similar circumstances this individually.

What the first circumstance illustrates is, the mindset with which you get out of bed makes all the difference in the world.  It tailors your approach to life, your appreciation for life and the instances that follow.

The second circumstance illustrates that no matter what life throws at us, no matter how overwhelming it might seem, we each have a choice.  How we deal with those circumstances is vastly more important than what life throws at us.

Are we going to treat an obstacle on the road, like a boulder, or a particle of dust to dust off our shoulders?  Are we going to treat an issue that comes our way, like a pebble rolling down a hill while we stand at the bottom, or are we going to see the dilemma as an avalanche that grows overtime and will overwhelm us?  It all comes down to a sound mindset.

A mindset of can do or can’t do; a mindset of viewing issues life throws at us as obstacles, or opportunities for growth.

Everything that makes us grow, though not always pleasant, is a good thing, and we should thankful for it.  In this growth is where we become more capable, savvier, stronger, wiser.

But its all a matter of perspective, a matter of mindset, a sound mindset.

Now when life plants a problem on your path, are you going to see it as a veritable deathstar in front of you, with its crosshairs set on you, with no option but defeat?  Or are you going to see it as a giant water pistol?

#Book Review: Maximum Achievement by Brian Tracy | #SmartReads

“It always seems impossible until it is done.”
– Nelson Mandela

“A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.”
– James Allen

Given the penchant of self-help books guaranteeing everything under the sun, “Never judge a book by its cover” was the first thing that came to mind upon seeing the cover of this book.  Thankfully though, this book was not merely a ghost in a shell.

Maximum Achievement by Brian Tracy is a rather unique approach to create a road to success.

Drawing from a wide-array of fields such as philosophy, psychology, history, metaphysics, and more, Tracy fuses the insights learned through experience and research into this treasure trove of information.  All of this is aimed for individuals to become active in their own self-mastery.

The insights are varied, but critical, for they cover subjects such as an individual’s relationships, mindset, critical decision making, and even interactions with children.  The book features a lot more than that too.

In fact, some of the tips suggested in this book remind me of Neurolinguistic Programming [NLP] books, given the nature of the topic, which is focusing your thoughts into creating new habits in order to bring about profound individual change.  The loose comparison is mentioned to serve as a reference for those that might have read books on NLP or are interested in them.

The one thing that the author homes in on, and does so aptly, is the importance of having a sound mindset.  As the author alludes to often, with proper mindset anything can be achieved.

In fact, in a sentiment that calls to mind the timeless quote by Yoda, “Do or do not, there is no try,” the author states:

“A major turning point in your thinking comes when you change your language from “whether” to “how.”  When you start thinking about how you are going to accomplish something you want, and you simultaneously refuse to consider whether it’s possible or not, your entire mentality begins to change.”[1][Bold Emphasis Added]

Is it really that simple?  Henry Ford seemed to think so when he intimated, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.”

A strong mindset is crucial.  In fact, maintaining a keen mindset is everything.  Maintaining a proper mindset should be a key focus of individuals, since creating negative habits can happen a lot quicker than one realizes.  Tracy soberingly notes:

The most dangerous habits you can form…are mental habits.  Because of the fact that whatever you think about continually you create in your life, your negative or self-limiting thoughts hurt you more than anything else you can engage in.”[2][Bold Emphasis Added]

This is something attentive individuals will notice when being mindful of their surroundings and thoughts.  Not only has this happened to me, but I have witnessed it often in family, friends and acquaintances.   Such is the power of the human mind, and as such it should be carefully and thoughtfully employed.

Whether we become our own worst enemies, or we become our best friends is up to us.  The great thing is that we hold the key to the doorway of change.

Maximum Achievement is a terrific read in its totality, made all the more relevant by how high-speed our lives have become, as well as how easy it is for people to get distracted and create poor habits.  Complement this book with Getting Things Done by David Allen, and you will undoubtedly have a great foundation from which to proceed into a better and more rewarding future.  Stay focused, stay productive, and do not be dissuaded by any obstacles that might arise.
