As individuals, we all have comfort zones of myriad types, just like in Poker.  Some are good, some are bad, and some are downright detrimental and dispiriting.

Good comfort zones would be finding comfort in a moment, a person, a place, an idea, et al.  Bad comfort zones would be things that restrict the growth of the individual.  Poker also mirrors this notion rather incisively.

As an individual, when my health declined considerably years ago, there was a certain level of comfort by being home all the time.  The predictability of it was something that I didn’t mind since it was the outside world that I couldn’t withstand at the time.  Thankfully, those circumstances changed considerably for the better.  Not that being at home didn’t offer growth as a person because those significant circumstances did give me an incredible move forward, but it was of a different type, a different path.

At the current moment though, I find myself in another circumstance where I am struggling with, though in a different sense.  I have found solace, joy, and incredible growth in writing and its something I am reveling in.  Honestly, if it wasn’t because I feel I am doing something meaningful, the notion of quitting outright wouldn’t bother me too much.  But considering that I have about a ‘bajillion’ ideas (its a word, google it), many of which are incredibly meaningful, coupled with the fact that writing has always been a dream of mine, I find it incredibly painful even to contemplate stopping.

I am a reasonable person, so I do always consider every possibility because considering every path you have available, and some you might not even know are there, is something that never hurts.  This would not be unlike seeking a treasure and not knowing where to go, where to explore.  If you only limit yourself to one path, you might find the treasure; you might find the treasure through a few paths; but if as an explorer you willingly limit yourself to only a handful of paths, rather than contemplating every single path available, then you would be doing yourself a great disservice.  These are my current sentiments at the time regarding writing as a passion.

To quit writing would be in a sense to return to a comfort zone, not a bad one per se, but something that would definitely be problematic to a certain extent, if not an incredible one.

What poker has always taught me is that no matter what the game throws at you, what life throws at you, there are usually way more paths available for every player, every person.  I am sure there is a lot that hasn’t hit me yet, things that I haven’t contemplated, and that’s okay.  Being arrogant that I have all the answers is to be close-minded and limit myself.  That said, at least I am cognizant of not having all the answers and remaining open to everything because again, limiting yourself in any way is like merely playing poker and deciding to play one hand against one person and that’s it.  That would be akin to willingly reading only one page of the book and saying, “Oh, that’s it.  Okay, guess that’s that.”

Life, like poker, offers many possibilities – many of which play out over and over again, under different circumstances, with different ‘cards’ so to speak.  Regardless of what circumstance it is, remaining patient in both poker in life will always yield amazing results if individuals ‘play their cards right’.

One of the vanguard notions in poker is how crucial it is not to remain in a comfort zone for long, or at all.  This is because if you do not grow as a player, as an individual, then the rest of the field will blow right by you at any moment given to the ceaseless and ever-evolving learning environment players find themselves in and the myriad resources available for growth.

What cards an individual decides to play, and what cards an individual decides to fold are choices individuals have to choose, but to merely play one card – the comfort card – as if there are no other options is to willingly keep your mind within a box, it is willingly curtailing the paths of the individual.

Such is not the path of growth in Poker, and will never be.

Life is no different.

In poker, like in life, people wear masks.  In both, every single individual wears masks of different types.  Due to that, when individuals do decide to pull the proverbial ‘Mask Card’ from the poker deck of life is an intriguing proposition to consider.

Some of these masks are worn as a defense mechanism; some are worn to hide pain; some wear masks  to cover up myriad emotions; some wear them only with dealing with specific people; others wear masks to get through the bog that life can provide at times; others wear masks simply because they’ve worn it all their lives and got used to them and forgot they were masks all along.

Nigh ever individual can relate to many or most of the above.  Irrespective of reasons, masks are something that help individuals fight through the tides of the day, battle the waves that are ceaseless as we drift among the seas of life.

My argument is not that masks do not have a place, not at all.  How people live their life’s is their business.  I am merely bringing up this topic because I feel it deserves discussion, or at least ponderance at length.

Due to recent circumstances the last few days dealing with worries and concerns I’ve found myself under some of the premises above.  In fact, sometimes, it’s very easy to forget you have a mask on.  That said, it often takes someone you know to realize something is amyss before you yourself realize it, or some random circumstance that reminds you, “Hey, you still have that mask on, don’t forget.”

Some people might argue, shouldn’t you be authentic the whole time?  What is the use of masks?  One moment, and we will address that in a bit.

First: Riddle me this batman: do you know of any single place in which people are 100% authentic, and if so, what takes place in that locale?  Ponder that for a minute.

With the above in mind, my contention that follows is that people wear masks all the time, for the most part.  Some might instantly argue, “Well how do YOU know what most people do?”

It’s not just me that knows, but many people in fact, those that are least exposed to it.  What do I mean by this?

What’s the one place where individuals can see people of myriad backgrounds showing their true colors?  Facebook.  People will do and say things on Facebook that they would never carry out in ‘real life’ in a million years.  Keyboard cowboys abound many screens, and trolls are out in force.  There is no better place to see what people will do when they do not wear masks than on Facebook and social media.

There is no better place to see this war rage between individuals in myriad social strata than in Facebook, it’s always an endless flame war.  Words said in endless waves of anger, tirades made from the most hateful thoughts that individuals can manifest, all of which lead to no understanding, no common ground under which to move forward.  While many arguments aren’t that intense, a lot of arguments hold no regard for human dignity and respect.  This is (1) a failure of communication, (2) culture principles, (3) common sense, (4) education, (5) and the manipulation of the divide and conquer left-right paradigm.  Each of those incisive elements, concurrent with other ones, al provide the veritable foundation upon which the flame wars burn and lead to the very division that the powers that be revel in.

All social media platforms provide a veritable armor under which most people feel safe to share their true feelings; feelings that many times people wouldn’t share with complete strangers in real life but waste not a nanosecond in telling strangers online in far larger numbers.  This is not everyone, not by a long shot, but a sizeable part of individuals on social media platforms do this.

This type of circumstance seems to showcase why masks in society have a place.

Imagine what would happen if people went around their days doing in real life what they do in social media?  To say all hell would brake lose, would be putting it lightly.

Such circumstances show why maybe its okay for people to be a little reserved in their thoughts by wearing masks.  Not because they shouldn’t air out their thoughts, but the way it’s done is nothing but adding gasoline to fires that will never be put out, not under the current circumstances.

Perhaps its just how society is evolving with the fusion of traditional communications with social media platforms, perhaps its something else.  But the same way that masks help society from becoming overly antagonistic (in modern times at least), masks help individuals from having to deal with uncomfortable situations that they understandably don’t want to deal with [1][2].

With the above in mind, we can gather that masks certainly have a place in society.  When an individual chooses to wear is their business, but to say that masks have no place in society is akin to saying people have no right to privacy, or people on poker tables shouldn’t have a poker face.

___________________________________________________________

[1] I say, ‘In modern times at least’, because I think that if we were to take individuals from a century ago and transpose them on modern social media, the discussions that would take place would blow out of the water anything people do in modern times.  The average discussion would be much more enlightening because they were a culture of character, and not a culture of personality.  The distinction of this was learned by me from Susan Cain’s phenomenal book on introverts called Quiet – The Power Of Introverts In A World That Can’t Stop talking, though the idea stems from another author.  Psychologist Cain expounds upon it saliently, however.  This book is highly recommended.

[2] This was reference with me not wanting to vent with certain people in person about my current situation, though I did and do certainly vent to others.

[3] I deliberately used the Phantom Of The Opera type of mask in the post as a symbol for the individual having to wear a masks throughout most of life, just like in the story.  Moreover, I love the mask because (1) I enjoy ever variation of the Phantom Of The Opera Story, whether it is the movie, the play, the video game, or in a book; (2) the opera and story make a great metaphor for life, and (3) the mask serves as a fantastic representation for Halloween, which is my second favorite Holiday between Thanksgiving and Summer time.  I would also like to write an analysis on this story and turn it into a much larger metaphor, but we will see about that.

April 16, 2019

I am writing the following due to a post on Instagram that was shared a long time ago that had to do with child abuse and so on.  I just finished reading that right now, which is why I am writing this.  That’s the ‘inspiration’ for this, if you could call it that.

I wrote a post long ago on Instagram called “Black Unicorns”, based on a topic that I discussed with a friend of mine many years ago.  The whole point of that piece was it was under the premise for my appreciation for women which became the metaphor for Black Unicorns.  That much was obvious, what wasn’t obvious is what follows.

In my nascent stages of life, my family and I underwent significant and excruciating abuse.  This type of environment obviously tailors who you become, what your fears are, what terrifies you, who you trust, and so on.  The main part of all of this abuse stemmed from my father, which I have alluded to him countless times as being the ‘father of darkness’.  Conversely, I have alluded to my mother as the ‘Mother of light’.  Neither parent was perfect, but I appreciate both, though obviously my Mom by magnitudes more, but it was my father who chose to unleashed cataclysmic pain that no human being, yet alone a child should ever endure.

That dichotomy leads to me often feeling that I live in a world of grays, a subject which once again arose in my mind very recently.  Perhaps I will write about it again, though I am uncertain as to this time.

Grays, as part of the color spectrum, is something that is synonymous with storms.  Storms are a whole kaleidoscope of grays.  That’s how I’ve often felt in life, and many of the scenarios that took place after only cemented my kinship with the colors gray, silver, platinum, and the like.

More importantly though, I say all this because people that did not know me as a human being made an erroneous assumption about why I wrote that post.  Yes, that post was about women, as I said before, that much was obvious.

What isn’t so obvious that the pyramid under which that post stands, the pyramid that is the constant support,  the walls that have provided a sanctum for my entire life, the very place where my spirit often rests, the foundation of the very person that I am, is my Mom.  At the top of the pyramid my trust for women, all women, stands, because I haven’t been fucked over as much by women, nigh ever, as I have been screwed over by men, mainly my fatherBut it was my mom who was always the foundation for everything amazing that followedMoreover, most of my best friends over time and still now have been female too, which only further reinforced my trust for women.

I didn’t plan on sharing this as it was on spontaneous feeling, but I share all this because I hope people in the future don’t end up misjudging others, whoever it is, without actually (1) knowing them, (2) knowing how their mind works, (3) knowing what the context is, but most important, (4) knowing what lead to that context.

It’s easy to see the world in black and whites, but most of the time the world really is a whirlwind of grays; a whirlwind that is never-ceasing because a lot of what happens in life, is entirely subjective.

That is why I always bring everything down to ‘the individual’.

Everything we do, see and experience is entirely through our independent point of views.  These points of views, as I’ve often referenced, tailor every breath that we take, every step that we take, every road we will venture towards, and ultimately, the life that we live.

Perhaps a road will serve as a perfect conclusion for this, for never more will we see grays then on the road of life; the road that is littered with every single circumstance imaginable, all of which lead towards the future.

It’s on that road, the road of life, that we will witness countless storms, storms of every type imaginable, storms that are as wondrous as they are frightening, but storms that, at the end of the day, are paved in grays.

Fortuitously, it is within those grays, those storms that pour endless rain that water travels through and thankfully sprinkles the Earth with.

Water that brings life; water whose very essence is balance; water whose very being is interwoven within the streams of life more than any other element on earth.

And that world of grays up above is what helps it all along.

Imagination is the gateway to everything that is created.

An individual merely must step through that doorway and begin imagining possibilities, solutions, change; positive change every single individual is capable of displacing.

For instance, just yesterday, someone left a metaphorical seed at my doorstep.  I call the act a ‘seed’ because a seed always holds endless potential.  And just as seeds need water and the right environment to grow and fluoresce, individuals need the right inspiration and the right circumstances to act on imagination.

The seed this person left was promptly used by me and fertilized as such, and voila, I there in chose to act.  This was because (1) the right inspiration came around, and (2) the right circumstance was coupled to that.  If both hadn’t taken place, my decision to create something wouldn’t have happened.

Why does an individual need both inspiration and circumstance to take place?  Because people get inspired all the time, but many times individuals do not act on that inspiration, they merely ruminate upon it at length under endless “what-if’s”.  I used to be incredibly guilty of this.  On the other hand, many people create things quite often, but when they aren’t feeling inspired they are not at the top of their proverbial game, which is why inspiration is so crucial – it acts as fuel for those seeds of imagination.  This could be emblematic of writer’s block – the ability to create something, but not much that ends up being useful.

The fusion of both above concepts is the perfect merger of gasoline and match; the gasoline is the seed in endless potential, and the match is the individual acting within the right circumstance to unleash the endless tsunamis of their bondless potential.  This means everything.

As an individual, at any moment, at any time, you can inspire yourself to create something wondrous – be it writing, painting, creating music and the like.  But it doesn’t stop there, because your very ability to act on your inspiration and imagination pushes others to test the boundaries of their imagination, wherever they may lead.

All of this is incredible potential that is inherent within every single individual and has an extremely resounding effect that doesn’t get the credit that it deserves.

How many seeds will you drop today?

What forms of seeds will you share?

What type of creations will those encourage?

It’s an interesting proposition to consider, isn’t it?

Every moment is the right moment, just keep dropping those seeds.

For when the right time comes someone will not only appreciate that gesture of kindness, but they will contribute to the cycle of creation that is woven within the very strands of life.

Dropping seeds to help creation itself, to help life move forward?

What a neat concept.
