Who Is The Individual? | #Perspective | #Conformity | #SocialEngineering | #Mindset

All greatness of character is dependent on individuality. The man who has no other existence than that which he partakes in common with all around him, will never have any other than an existence of mediocrity.”

Earlier today, I was asked, “How many versions of you are there?”  It’s a great question, so let’s explore it.

Which version reflects me best: am I the person that loves to write, or the person that loves to dance?  Am I someone who loves living life to the fullest, or the shy person that retreats within himself many a time?  Am I the person that’s written most love poems in my life while listening to Eminem songs, or am I the person that’s written most dark poems while listening to songs from Britney Spears?  Am I the person that has no tattoos, or the person that plans on getting at least 7 of them?  Am I someone who loves to have conversations, or am I someone who prefers reading a book?  Am I the person that loves to read the night away, dance the night away, or talk the night away with someone?  Am I the person that has that enjoys dance music, or classical music?  Am I a person that is mindful, or am I someone who lacks mindfulness?  Am I the book cover, or am I the book?

I am all that, and more.  Every single individual has a lot more range than most people realize.

Let’s dive deeper into this conundrum.

The question, “How many versions of you are there?” has two inherent and crucial assumptions.

First amongst these is the fact that there must only be one ‘version’ of you – that you as an individual must fit within a box.  This is the very definition of conformity.

Ask yourself this: why must there be just one version of any single individual out there?  Are individuals not boundless by nature?  Aren’t the limits individuals carry around as baggage (whether societal imposed or personally imposed) detrimental?  Why would anyone limit themselves in any way shape or form?

The second inherent assumption is the fact that you are not the book, you are the book cover.

If you are seen as a ‘book cover’ and not as a book, what would that mean?  That would mean that if someone finds you crying because something is incredibly painful, you might be labeled “Emo”.  But, is that the version of the person?  Isn’t it a little shortsighted to judge someone based on only one event, one instance?

What if the person is incredibly happy, would the same apply?  Would that happy person only ever be happy and never be sad, or depressed, or frustrated?  Of course not.

Seeing any single individual from only one color from the full spectrum is seeing them in an incredibly narrow way, no matter who it is.  In fact, it is my contention that this is the reason that people sell themselves short, because they are not expected to have a lot of range.

Individuals are simply expected to fit within societal cookie-cutter molds, and if you don’t fit into these worlds, you are (1) labeled a black sheep, (2) treated in an askance matter, (3) looked down upon, (4) made fun of, (5) ridiculed, so on and so forth.

Countless conversations with individuals have taught me that people are who they choose to beBut who they choose to be is based incredibly around how they have been taught to see themselves, whether by family, school or society.

Such is the world we live in, and individuals – every single one of us – have to be cognizant of this.

Always remember, seeing someone as merely a book cover, is missing out on them as a book; it is missing out on the full range that this individual contains.

It is in that range that we get to see individuals for who they truly are, and it is in this range where people bond the strongestbecause they get to see the deeper aspects of themselves and others in ways most never even contemplate.

And isn’t that what life is about, contemplation, bonding, meaningful relationships, and more?  How is that ever supposed to happen if people are only judged by their appearances, as a veritable book cover?

Book covers will never tell the whole story, only books can; narrow versions of individuals will never offer the full range of that person, only an individual operating in their true boundless nature can.

And that true boundless nature is You.

I am writing the following due to a post on Instagram that was shared a long time ago that had to do with child abuse and so on.  I just finished reading that right now, which is why I am writing this.  That’s the ‘inspiration’ for this, if you could call it that.

I wrote a post long ago on Instagram called “Black Unicorns”, based on a topic that I discussed with a friend of mine many years ago.  The whole point of that piece was it was under the premise for my appreciation for women which became the metaphor for Black Unicorns.  That much was obvious, what wasn’t obvious is what follows.

In my nascent stages of life, my family and I underwent significant and excruciating abuse.  This type of environment obviously tailors who you become, what your fears are, what terrifies you, who you trust, and so on.  The main part of all of this abuse stemmed from my father, which I have alluded to him countless times as being the ‘father of darkness’.  Conversely, I have alluded to my mother as the ‘Mother of light’.  Neither parent was perfect, but I appreciate both, though obviously my Mom by magnitudes more, but it was my father who chose to unleashed cataclysmic pain that no human being, yet alone a child should ever endure.

That dichotomy leads to me often feeling that I live in a world of grays, a subject which once again arose in my mind very recently.  Perhaps I will write about it again, though I am uncertain as to this time.

Grays, as part of the color spectrum, is something that is synonymous with storms.  Storms are a whole kaleidoscope of grays.  That’s how I’ve often felt in life, and many of the scenarios that took place after only cemented my kinship with the colors gray, silver, platinum, and the like.

More importantly though, I say all this because people that did not know me as a human being made an erroneous assumption about why I wrote that post.  Yes, that post was about women, as I said before, that much was obvious.

What isn’t so obvious that the pyramid under which that post stands, the pyramid that is the constant support,  the walls that have provided a sanctum for my entire life, the very place where my spirit often rests, the foundation of the very person that I am, is my Mom.  At the top of the pyramid my trust for women, all women, stands, because I haven’t been fucked over as much by women, nigh ever, as I have been screwed over by men, mainly my fatherBut it was my mom who was always the foundation for everything amazing that followedMoreover, most of my best friends over time and still now have been female too, which only further reinforced my trust for women.

I didn’t plan on sharing this as it was on spontaneous feeling, but I share all this because I hope people in the future don’t end up misjudging others, whoever it is, without actually (1) knowing them, (2) knowing how their mind works, (3) knowing what the context is, but most important, (4) knowing what lead to that context.

It’s easy to see the world in black and whites, but most of the time the world really is a whirlwind of grays; a whirlwind that is never-ceasing because a lot of what happens in life, is entirely subjective.

That is why I always bring everything down to ‘the individual’.

Everything we do, see and experience is entirely through our independent point of views.  These points of views, as I’ve often referenced, tailor every breath that we take, every step that we take, every road we will venture towards, and ultimately, the life that we live.

Perhaps a road will serve as a perfect conclusion for this, for never more will we see grays then on the road of life; the road that is littered with every single circumstance imaginable, all of which lead towards the future.

It’s on that road, the road of life, that we will witness countless storms, storms of every type imaginable, storms that are as wondrous as they are frightening, but storms that, at the end of the day, are paved in grays.

Fortuitously, it is within those grays, those storms that pour endless rain that water travels through and thankfully sprinkles the Earth with.

Water that brings life; water whose very essence is balance; water whose very being is interwoven within the streams of life more than any other element on earth.

And that world of grays up above is what helps it all along.

Full disclosure: I’m a huge Transformers fan.  You’ve been warned.

When speaking of imagination, my focus has always been on getting individuals themselves to use their own imagination because that’s the only imagination they can control.  That said, your imagination could literally infuse excitement into someone else.

For example, my mind’s liable to go anywhere, at any time, for any reason, and it does.  It does often.  But it’s not like my mind’s just drifting and dreaming, not at all.  It’s actively engaged in creating something, sometimes a short story, a rhyme scheme, a poem, a blog, it doesn’t matter.  My mind is usually active somewhere to a considerable degree and not merely daydreaming.

In that sense, it’s not unlike typing a paper on a computer and talking to someone simultaneously.  You’re paying attention; in fact, you remember the whole conversation and can pick up exactly where the other person left off.  It’s just that your mind is slightly engaged on something else.  I’ve been told that my eyes give it away, and it’s not hard to tell according to everyone that’s told me.  I feel bad, but I can’t help myself though, its who I am.

Depending on whom I’m with and if I’m comfortable with them, I’m liable to actually say what’s on my mind, usually in a joking manner because making people laugh is one way do add a little sugar to life without much effort.

Anyhow, one thing that I’m liable to blurt out at any moment when seeing construction vehicles is, “It’s a Decepticon!”.  Really, don’t ask.  I see construction vehicles, I see Decepticons taking over.  Oh yeah, the ‘taking over’ is part of the story too, but we’re not going to get into that.  I usually say it around adults though, my main peoples and whatnot.  Sometimes kids might hear me say that and some get it and some don’t.  With the ones that don’t, that’s when you know imagination’s staring to falter in the next generation.

When they curiously ask me what I mean, I just tell them the truth: it’s obvious the construction vehicles are Decepticons.

“Can’t you see it?  Remember Devastator?”
“Yeah.”
“So you remember all those construction vehicles?”
“Yeah.”
“And they were all bad, remember.”
“Yeah….”
“Have you ever seen a good construction vehicle with the Autobots?”
“No.”
“It’s because the Decepticons use construction vehicles to take over.  The Autobots aren’t trying to take over, they like the world the way it is.”
“Yeahhhhhhhh I get it.”

Bam.  Simple.  Logical.  Yet, imaginative.

Well, it just so happens that visiting with my friend not long ago, before I got a chance to say “It’s a Decepticon!,” her son beat me to the punch.  I had a huge smile on my face, and she says “You started it!”  Raising my palms and backing away in resignation I say, “Hey, it’s not MY FAULT they’re taking over, sheesh!”

The point is, it never struck me how the smallest of imaginative circumstances can give  someone else a jolt until then.  I mean, it’s obvious in hindsight.  But to see someone get downright excited to see the same thing you see, to feel the same way you feel, that’s something.

Conversely, some people, just have no imagination.  The imagination they employ is like 1/100000th of what it could be.  It might be because (1) they’re to cool for that, (2) imagination is for kids (even though adults employ it all the time), (3) imagination is ‘stupid’, (4) and any other host of reasons that doesn’t hold water.

It’s okay though, just because some people employ only one quadrillionth of their imagination, doesn’t mean everyone else should.

Main takeaway: you never know what your imagination will do for yourself, yet alone others.

One of the best writers of all time, the notable Ray Bradbury said it best:

“Imagination should be the center of your life.”

Today, you merely saw construction vehicles.  Tomorrow?  You see Decepticons.  The next day?  Don’t ask me about that, it’s your imagination.  I could tell each and every one of you what happens in my mind, but most people wouldn’t believe it.

More importantly, what happens with my imagination is not what matters, it’s what happens with yours.

Why write about mindset at all?[1] Why not write about pyramids, history, ancient civilizations, consciousness, advanced weapons, secret weapons, propaganda, and other topics?

This is because any of those topics, any topic whatsoever, shared by any individual, whether it comes from this blog, or anywhere else in your life, is irrelevant without approaching the topic with a proper mindset.  Whatever do I mean?

If you are reading this, and are a reader from a Western Nation, then more than likely you have been subjected to public schooling and it is doing a bang up job at ‘teaching’ you what to think, but not how to think.  Since that is the case, then you, as myself and many others, have been subjected to a tsunami of propaganda that would be unreal if people wouldn’t be writing about it over and over again.

Knowledge of this propaganda, social engineering et al., is crucial, for these tailor an individual’s public schooling, our knowledge base, our intellectual capacity, our mindset, and moreBut the mainstream establishment and mainstream public schooling will never outright tell you such things exist, and if they do, you get the cursory view of it, the watered-down version; you get the glossy book cover version, what looks nice, what looks pretty – a rosy-colored lens if there ever were one.  Rarely do we ever get the truth from governments and the media as individuals.  At least, not when it matters most.

More importantly, if an individual has been trained to not question anything, not to be inherently curious, if that individual has been trained to blindly follow orders, and merely become a cog in the machine, then what mindset would such an individual employ?  The mindset employed would be one of not exploring any subjects; that is system-imposed close-mindedness if there ever was any; a gear in a machine at worst, and the epitome of conformity at its best.  Such an individual would lack open-mindedness by default, such an individual would never contemplate possibilities as they could be, or as they are.

I could show you source after source after source of the most fascinating, and most interesting life-changing ideas, but if your mind isn’t open to it, it doesn’t matter now does it?  And it should matter, because the information discussed in this blog (for the most part) is incredibly important and has resounding effects in our individual lives.  These are resounding effects that could change you, the individual, down to the core.  But those effects cannot take place without having the proper mindset.

Mindset is the catapult from which the individual launches from, the space station from which the individual ventures into the unknows of space seeking answers, seeking knowledge, pondering deeper questions than ever thought possible, considering the finer strands that life and reality has to offer in more ways than you could have imagined.

Since time immemorial, individuals throughout history have tackled life head on with a sound mindset; individuals have risen to the occasion and conquered unfathomable obstacles; individuals have made inventions that changed the lives of everyone around them, changes that altered the course of history; all of this follows a “can do” attitude, a “can do” mindset.

But saying that mindset is everything would be a lie, for the wrong mindset employed can have incredibly damaging effects for individuals and those around them.  During World War II, the Nazi’s were the epitome of what the darker side of mindset can do.

To maximize the effect of mindset, individuals must be mindful of what they put it in their minds, of what they subject themselves to.  Mindset and mindfulness are not two separate lenses, but two gears in our intellectual machine, a machine whose purpose helps lay the foundation for the paths that you journey towards as an individual.

Where mindfulness is employed, a strong mindset follows, for mindfulness centers you, your thoughts, your actions; where mindfulness isn’t employed, a strong mindset could still be employed, but the action that follows will not be as focused, centered, incisive, precise, and so on.  Moreover, if your mindset is running on autopilot, running from your subconscious rather than from your being level, then you will not be engaged fully in life, and how could one make optimal choices in such a manner?  Do you see all those different tiers of mindfulness and how that couples to mindset?  And those are not all of them either, not by a longshot.

Mindset is still a tool all individuals may employ, not unlike a hammer.  And just like a hammer can build things, it can destroy things.  Mindset is just as so.  Mindset, employed correctly, will create magnificent things, like any other tool.  Mindset, employed incorrectly, is highly destructive, just like any tool can be.   Therefore, its paramount to be thoughtful in your actions and considerations, for they have a bearing in your life as an individual.

All tools are capable of being immensely helpful in every single way.  In what way, that is ultimately the choice of the individual.  A sound mindset is only useful if employed soundly, just as a hammer can only build things when used correctly.

Now I ask you this: you have a mental tool that’s known as mindset and serves as an incredible tool in your life; are you going to make sure the tool is going to be fully operational, ready to be deployed, sharpened as it needs to be, not unlike sharpening a knife before use?

With a sound mindset, what will you build with that tool?  What door will you create for yourself with that tool?  Are you open to those possibilities?

More importantly: where will that door lead?  The only way to find out is to begin constructing that door.  And the only way to do that is to become proactive in your own life, and not merely reactive to what life throws at you.

The notable John C. Maxwell said it best:

“Life is a matter of choices, and every choice you make makes you.”

Notes:

[1] This post is going to set the foundation in the dichotomy of the light side of mindset, and the dark side of mindset, each of which will be split into separate series.  Each side will be elaborated upon in the future at length.  This piece is merely to (1) serve as the introduction to showcase the dichotomy of mindset, but also to consider that (2) although the word mindset is tossed around quite often in modern life, there’s a significant different between each type of mindset, and the darker side of mind set is nigh never given a fair glance, yet alone deeply considered.
